Applied Anatomy: The Moving Body
2026-27 School Year Enrollment Opens May 1st
Applied Anatomy: The Moving Body
High School Lab Science - Anatomy and Kinesiology
Taught by Sheramy Turcotte
Whether you enjoy swimming, dancing, swinging a golf club, pitching a ball, running, bicycling, hiking, fishing, skiing or e-sports our bodies are in constant motion, adapting to every challenge we ask of them. Through the lens of sports and movement, this year-long lab-based class will examine the role anatomy, physiology and biomechanics play in sports. Our labs will focus on understanding our own bodies capabilities, how we can safely challenge our bodies, optimize performance, fuel the systems that provide us with energy and prevent injury.
This class will fulfill the requirements of a high-school anatomy and physiology class and will cover the skeletal, muscular, nervous, endocrine, cardiovascular, respiratory, and digestive systems along with specialized studies in biomechanics directly related to the sport(s) of the students choosing. Because of the unique focus of this class, it is also appropriate for those that have previously studied anatomy and wish to delve deeper into the biomechanics and physics of the moving body.
Each week students will be responsible for completing the week’s reading and applicable formative assignments (vocabulary, short self-assessment quizzes, and note-taking). Over the course of the year we will explore topics through project based learning, weekly labs and scientific reports and articles as applicable. Readings will be provided via PDF.
At the end of the year each student will receive a final grade, a summary of the class, and a personalized note on their learning progression.
Course Grading:
Exams, projects, lab assessments: 60% of final grade
Homework: 30% of final grade
Class participation: 10% of final grade
Students are expected to complete weekly readings, vocabulary work, note-taking, and short assignments that support upcoming labs and assessments. Homework is essential for success in this course, as in-class time is focused on application and lab work. Students should plan for 2–4 hours per week and are expected to come to class prepared.
