World Literature and Modern World History
Taught by Adele Miller
2026-27 School Year Enrollment Opens May 1st
Taught by Adele Miller
These two courses are designed to work together as a rich, interdisciplinary pairing of World History and World Literature/ELA. While studying the history of a region is essential, and exploring its literature is equally important, examining both side by side offers a far more complete understanding of a nation’s growth, its people, and its cultural identity.
World Literature (ELA): Beyond the Western World
This year‑long, literature‑based ELA course explores global literary traditions from creation stories and mythology through modern works from South American, African, and Asian cultures.
Although we will use a textbook as a launching point for discussion, much of the year will center on reading novels, short stories, and essays. All materials will be provided through PDFs or physical books, and we always take into consideration students who rely on audiobooks as a primary tool.
Modern World History
This year‑long course examines the modern history (post–Middle Ages) of regions including South America, Africa, Asia, and Australia. While many high school students are familiar with the history and conflicts of the United States and Western Europe, this course expands their understanding of the global human experience by focusing on areas that may be less familiar.
Students will explore the historical forces that shaped these regions and also consider how those forces influence the current events unfolding today.
Shared Learning Experiences
Both classes will incorporate a wide range of media and learning modalities, including film clips, documentaries, debates, news segments, traditional textbook reading, online textbook access, novels, discussion, debate, and—most importantly—meaningful dialogue.
End‑of‑Year Documentation
At the end of each course, families will receive a summary of the class, a personalized note, and a final grade for each student.
Grading Scale
Tests & Projects: 60%
Homework: 30%
Class Participation: 10%
Homework for each course will be reading‑intensive and will include a mix of comprehension questions, essays, and occasional group projects. We recognize that many students join our program with varying levels of skill and time‑management experience, so workload modifications can be made to meet students where they are and support their growth.
Families should plan for approximately 3 hours of homework per week per course.
These classes can be taken in-person, remotely, or as an independent study.

History Tuesdays from 1:30-2:30
