2026-27 School Year Enrollment Opens May 1st
In today’s world, we are exposed to more visual content than ever before, and much of this content is designed to influence our thoughts and behaviors in some way. To engage with visual content critically, we need to be able to interpret and understand the ideas and meanings in what we see, analyze how visual information is constructed, and communicate information using a variety of visual mediums. New digital technologies have made it possible for almost anyone to create and share visual media, yet the pervasiveness of images and visual media does not necessarily mean that individuals are able to critically view, use, and produce visual content.
In Visual Literacy we will study how we see and interpret images, how we use visuals to convey meaning and what it means to be literate in a digital age. We will study how images have been used throughout history from art to storytelling, as social commentary to propaganda and from advertising to social media.
