The Art of Lines
Middle School
Taught by Jackie Johnson
2026-27 School Year Enrollment Opens May 1st
The Art of Lines is a creative skills class that helps middle school students strengthen both their artistic linework and their handwriting—because confident creators need both expressive drawing skills and clear, fluid written communication. This class blends art and penmanship in a way that feels fresh, accessible, and developmentally meaningful for tweens.
Students explore how lines communicate movement, emotion, structure, and style in drawing, while also learning how those same principles apply to handwriting and cursive. Through guided practice, playful warm‑ups, and creative projects, students build fine motor control, rhythm, consistency, and personal style.
What Students Will Learn
- Foundational line techniques used in drawing: contour, gesture, hatching, cross‑hatching, shading, and expressive linework
- How line pressure, angle, and movement affect both artwork and handwriting
- Cursive letter formation and connections with an emphasis on flow and legibility
- Strategies for improving neatness, spacing, and consistency without losing individuality
- How to use sketching and lettering together in creative compositions
Middle schoolers are at a perfect age to refine their fine motor skills while also developing a personal artistic voice. Strengthening handwriting supports academic confidence, while drawing builds creativity and visual communication. The Art of Lines brings both worlds together in a way that feels empowering, skill‑building, and fun.
